Shootout Win Caps Championship Game

The Glenview Stars PeeWee #2 players were happy to spend their Thanksgiving with their families but couldn’t wait to be on the ice the following day. After an 8-1 win Wednesday against the Winnetka Warriors to open the tournament, the Stars anticipated a tough game against the Chesterfield Falcons on Friday. After a scoreless first period, Matt Schauwecker put the Stars ahead with two unassisted goals. The Falcons quickly tied the game going into the third period. Half way through the third, with a battle on their hands, Brett Candra lit the lamp from a pass from John Panos who got it from Chuckie Secor. To finish the game, Max Abramov sealed the win with a goal assisted again by Secor.

The Stars went into their third game with confidence and saw two goals each from Secor, Abramov and Paul Kruchten to beat the Northbrook Bluehawks. The Stars knew they would have a tough opponent in Game Four facing the Wilmette Braves. Wilmette quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Stars were trying hard to get back into the game -- outshooting the Braves in the second period -- but came up short. To start the third period, Kruchten ripped a shot by the Wilmette goaltender to get on the scoreboard. Kruchten's goal gave the rest of his teamates a boost and a few minutes later Schauwecker scored through the goalie's five hole to tie the exciting tournament game 2-2. Needing the win to advance, the Stars were all over the Braves until lightning struck twice and Schauwecker scored again for the Stars to win the game.

After such a close game, the Stars were under strict orders from Coach Panos to drink some chocolate milk and rest for their championship game. The Glenview Stars faced the Gurnee Maulers for the Wishbone championship. After the nailbiter the Stars had with the Braves, they found themselves in a similar situation down 2-1 in the third period. This time things looked bleak. Coach Panos called a timeout with just under a minute to go to set up a play the Stars knew well and shoot for for a tie. When play resumed, the puck deflected from stick to stick when the Stars sent to it the point. Nico Lavalle stepped up with the clock winding down and took a slapshot on net, forcing a rebound that found Krutchten's stick with 19 seconds left in the game. Krutchten raised his arms in celebration as he sent the puck to the back of the net to send the game into overtime!

In the sudden-death overtime period, the Stars defense locked down the Maulers' offense, preventing any shots. The Stars D were determined to send this game to a shootout. After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout. The crowd was on pins and needles as each Star player took their turn at the solid Maulers goalie. After Secor, Will Friedman and Schauwecker scored, Stars goalie Connor Wall shut the door on a hard wrist shot to give the Stars the Wishbone championship win!
