Fundraiser Being Held to Support Family

Courtney Patten

Courtney spent her 14th birthday in the hospital but was visited by Chicago Blackhawk Patrick Kane, which brightened her spirit.

Courtney Patten, a defenseman on the U14 Chicago Mission team, was injured on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. During practice the team was doing a drill and Courtney fell and hit her head against the boards.

She was taken to Edwards Hospital where it was determined she had broken the C2 vertebrae in her neck. She was then transported to Lurie Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago and has since had surgery to place a pin in her neck to alleviate pain and support the fractured vertebrae. She is now in recovery.

There is a long journey ahead for Courtney and her family, which will require the support from the entire hockey community. Please consider making a personal commitment/goal to impact Courtney's journey with this fundraiser.

Fundraising decals are available with Courtney's name and jersey number for $10 each or $150 per team order. Proudly wearing Courtney's name and number on helmets/sticks/automobiles, truly displays an act of honor, love and strength that is found within the hockey community. For many, this unique hockey bond is not easily broken, and neither is our commitment to love and support Courtney ! We are all In this together!

Update from Ken Patten 9-27-2012

Hi all-

I apologize for the delay in this e-mail but as you can imagine, it has been a bit hectic. Judy and I wanted to thank all of you for the special birthday that Courtney had on Sunday. It really made her day. When she realized that she was going to have to spend her birthday in the hospital, she was really down. When the girls showed up with their smiling faces and gifts (an iPad no less!), she was absolutely in tears (of joy). She had a wonderful day and again we are really touched by your kindness and generosity. As an update, things are really progressing positively. The surgery went well, the follow up CAT scan looked good and the doctors are pleased. She worked with the physical therapist today and even walked to the bathroom and back! They had her sitting in a chair for an hour or so too. Mr. Eddie Olczyk showed up with Annie Camins from the Blackhawks and presented her with some gifts and autographs. She still needs to start eating. But, one step at a time. Thanks again, we are absolutely grateful to you all.

~Ken & Judy
