Dramatic Goal in Overtime Seals Stars Championship

The Glenview Stars Squirt 1 team won the championship at the Cold Fusion tournament in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Congratulations to the Glenview Stars Squirt 1 team for winning the championship of the Cold Fusion tournament this past weekend.

The Stars traveled to Grand Rapids Friday morning and took on the Joliet Jaguars that afternoon, posting the first of three shutouts behind great goaltending, tight defense and strong offensive pressure. After beating the Jaguars 4-0, the Stars settled in at the hotel, grabbed a snack and headed back to the rink to face the Chicago Hawks. The game was close until the third period when the Stars exploded for five unanswered goals on their way to an 8-2 victory.

Saturday afternoon saw the Stars back in action, this time blanking the Wilmette Braves in a 5-0 victory. After the game the whole team gathered for lunch near the rink where they powered up for their next challenge and watched the NHL Chicago Blackhawks beat the Winnipeg Jets. That evening the Stars took on the Michigan Nationals, sealing their spot in the championship game with a 6-0 victory and their third shutout of the weekend. On Saturday night, the Stars hit the pool and then rested up for the championship game on Sunday.

In the final game of the weekend, coaches Rob and Mike Emme led the Stars in a rematch against the Chicago Hawks. The Hawks came to play again and the Stars trailed 3-2 at the end of the second period. In the third, the Stars came on strong tying the game with nine minutes to go and taking a 4-3 lead a few minutes later. The Hawks wouldn't go quietly, though, and tied the game again, sending the teams into overtime to decide the championship. The Stars started the overtime on the penalty kill but they held strong, killing off the remaining 26 seconds of penalty time, and then it was back to 4-on-4 for both teams. Several minutes of furious action later, tournament MVP Grant Loughran beat the Hawks goalie to seal the Stars victory, causing the team to erupt over the boards to celebrate the championship-winning goal.
