Stars Join Forces With Opponent to Support Community

When the Glenview Stars PeeWee Major CSDHL team was invited to play two end-of-season scrimmages against the MWC Wildcats in Milwaukee, the Stars proposed that the two teams “bridge the border” and work together to hold a joint food and clothing drive to support the local community. The community service project was organized under the guidelines of the the Chicago Blackhawks ServICE Crew program.

The Stars created a flyer about the donation day and players from both teams reached out into their communities, asking family members, neighbors and classmates for donations that they could bring into the Kern Center arena, the site of the games on the Milwaukee School of Engineering campus.

On game day, the Wildcats set up a collection station for the donated goods. The Stars and MWC Wildcats teams enjoyed lunch together then joined forces to move all the donated goods to waiting vehicles.

Working with the Friedens Community Ministries, Inc., a United Way affiliated organization that supports a community of more than 58,000 living in economically challenged conditions, the two clubs worked together to fill several large SUVs with donations.

At Friedens, staff gave a tour of their operations to the teams. During the visit, a local resident stopped the players to ask for some blankets. The request was quickly filled and it offered a clear example of how the two clubs, working together on a ServICE Crew project, were helping others in their community make ends meet and stay warm at night.

Overall, the Glenview Stars and MWC Wildcats had a great time, enjoying two exciting hockey games, making new friends, and gathering food and clothing to support Friedens in its mission to help the residents in need in the community.
