In response to recent inquiries about the impact of ice resurfacing operations on indoor air quality, the Glenview Park District issued the following statement:

Glenview Ice Center Air Monitoring Information – February 10, 2011

The Park District is committed to the safety of our patrons and staff.  This includes ensuring the safety of our facilities, including the Glenview Ice Center. Specifically, the Ice Center has state-of-the-art equipment for air ventilation and quality control. As part of the Glenview Ice Center’s 2008 facility improvements, two new large air handling units were added. These units provide for air exchange that brings in outside air to ventilate the entire facility, especially the main and studio ice rinks. Both units have carbon gas monitors to evaluate the ongoing ice arena air quality. The existing ventilation system is also designed to monitor indoor air quality; and in the event of a sub-standard air quality reading, the equipment will automatically exhaust out the inside air and circulate in fresh air.

Additionally, the Ice Center’s Zamboni (Ice resurfacing machine) is equipped with an EPA-certified engine and subject to meticulous maintenance and upkeep.  Given our proactive risk management and safety measures, we are confident as to the air quality and safety of the Glenview Ice Center.
