Myles Gottainer Inducted Into Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame

It’s the Glenview Stars January Update!

Winter break is over and the season is back in full swing. Buckle up because there is a lot of hockey coming your way!

Mid-Season Survey

We want to thank those of you who submitted your mid-season survey. Each of the 110 surveys received has been read and reviewed. Hockey Director Sylvain Turcotte has been meeting with each coach over the past two weeks to review the results. We will be sending out another survey at the end of the season. Please complete it so we can continue to improve the program.

Tournaments

The Stars have played in 35 tournaments so far. This weekend, Martin Luther King Day weekend, is the biggest tournament weekend of the season. We have nine teams on the road this weekend. After this weekend, two more teams are playing in a tournament and then it is time to finish up the regular season games. Playoffs are up next and include the Illinois State Hockey Championships (Blackhawk Cup), NIHL Wolves Cup and Central States Development Hockey League playoffs (for our three CSDHL teams.)

Congratulations to the Glenview Stars Bantam 2002 CSDHL team for winning the International Silver Stick Chicago Regional tournament. The Stars capped an impressive 5-0 tournament run with a win over cross-town and league rival Chicago Bulldogs in the championship game.  By winning the tournament, the Stars advance to play in the International Silver Stick Bantam AA Finals in Port Huron, MI on January 26-29, 2017.

This year's Bantam AA division of the International Silver Stick tournament is comprised of 44 North American regional qualifying teams: 18 in the United States and 26 in Canada. Regional champions were invited to compete in the International finals. Congratulations on the Chicago tournament win and good luck in Port Huron!

Good luck to all our Stars teams playing MLK weekend! Bring home those banners!

Stars Annual Benefit

Saturday, February 4, 2017, is the date for this season’s annual dinner dance fundraiser. The Stars have only one major fundraiser per year and this benefit is it! It is an adult only event.

As we previously noted, this year the money raised from the benefit will be used toward a video recording system available for use by all Stars teams and our new Player/Coach Development Fund.

Based on the results of the poll that was taken last month about the dinner dance, there will be no charge for admission to the event and the Stars will cover the cost of dinner for two adults per family. There will be a cash bar. The benefit is being held at:

Hilton Northbrook in Allgauer’s Restaurant
2855 Milwaukee Avenue, Northbrook, IL

6:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. (buffet dinner served at 7 p.m.)

Each family should have received an email from your team manager with information on donations and attendance. You must RSVP with your count and full names to your manager by January 27. Please consider donating gift certificates, products or services for our silent auction. Your name and business card will be displayed next to your donation. If you are interested in donating an item, product or service on behalf of your family or business, please contact Steve Papalas at spapalas@sbcglobal.net.

Darryl Belfry Coaching Workshop for Coaches

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to have Darryl Belfry run a coaching seminar as well as several on-ice workshops. The idea was to provide exposure for our coaching staff to the newest ideas in player development and coaching techniques. This was a huge opportunity for us!

Although Darryl is at the forefront of skill development for NHL players, he also brings a whole new model to youth player development. Darryl strongly believes that the best way to incorporate his philosophies into our program is for him to "teach the teachers," rather than have just another skills session that the kids will forget in an hour.

The weekend was very successful with a lot of interaction between Darryl and our coaches.

There are some near-term things that our coaches may start incorporating into the practices. We also expect to build a longer-term relationship with Darryl which will result in more development opportunities for our coaches.

This workshop was funded by the Glenview Stars Player/Coach Development Fund.

For those who aren't familiar with Darryl, here is a feature the CBC (Canadian TV) did on him during Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC is the roughly the Canadian equivalent of Monday Night Football in the U.S.!):

Congratulations to Myles Gottainer!

Longtime Glenview-area coach Myles Gottainer was selected to be inducted into the 2016 class of the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder's Category. Myles became a Master Level coach in 1987 and has taught thousands of players over the years, many of whom have enjoyed great success at the Junior, college, Olympic and professional levels! Myles will be honored at a ceremony on January 29, 2017. Congratulations Myles!

For more information on Myles and this great honor, please see the article on AHAI's website.

Spring Hockey

Spring tryouts will be the week of March 13. Stay tuned for the complete schedule and the spring coaching line-up, both of which will be announced soon.
