The Stars Squirt 1 team had an up and down time in the recent Northern Illinois Hockey League (NIHL) tournament. Having entered the tournament on a high note as the #2 seed, the team was excited to get started.

Unfortunately, high hopes were quickly dashed by a loss to a spirited Wilmette team by a score of 2-1. Going into Game 2, the Stars had their sights set on getting back into the tourney and taking the gold. Unfortunately again, the team was bested by the eventual first place Northbrook team by a score of 4-0.

Spirits were a bit low entering Game 3 against Evanston. However, the parents learned that the Stars still had a chance to get into the consolation game: If Glenview could beat the Wildkits by three or more goals and if Northbrook beat Wilmette in a parallel game on the other rink, there would be three teams tied for second place in our bracket. With that, and based upon our goal differential, the Stars could make the consolation game.

By a surprise course of events, the Stars beat the Wildkits by a score of 5-1 and Northbrook beat Wilmette, so the Stars advanced to the consolation game against the Leafs!

With renewed excitement and an eye on a third place flag, the Stars came out strong and dominated the game from start to finish. With strong goals by Mark Paulson, Dylan Garvey, Declan Darcy and Kevin Barrett, the Stars took third place overall in the NIHL tournament by beating the Leafs by a score of 4-1 and celebrated with an exciting rush at their star goalie, Nick Koster.

Special thanks to Dan and Lindsay Barrett.
