Sly's Corner

Now that the seeding round is over and the regular season is starting, it's a good time to remind ourselves that it is a kid's game for the kids, played by the kids. We need to remember to keep our emotions in check when a call does not go our way or a player makes a mistake.

Whether we are coaching or just watching the game, our actions are often imitated by the kids and if anything they certainly know what is going on. Let's enjoy the good times and forget the tough ones as soon as they occur. Hockey is the best game in the world and everyone involved is passionate about it; let's always share our passion in a positive way even though it can be hard at times.

Win or lose, close game or blowout, good or bad call by the ref, kids don't dwell on it, they just look forward to the next game, always looking ahead. Remember that whether we are on the bench, on the ice, in the stands or in the lobby, we all represent the Glenview Stars: let's do it proudly and with dignity. Don’t forget that every day is a great day for hockey.

If you have any questions about the program, please email me at hockeydirector@glenviewstars.org.

Yours in hockey,
Sylvain Turcotte

Notes from Tim Benz About the Skills Sessions

Phase One of this season’s skills program is coming to a close and Phase Two will soon be underway. Being the beginning of the season, Phase One focused on building and regaining the necessary skating muscles needed to compete at a high level of hockey.

Since we are now about two months into the season, we will focus on more "skill" oriented aspects of hockey such as shooting, passing and stickhandling. Players will still be improving skating strides and balance by completing much of the edgework and power skating drills from Phase One, except during Phase Two most of these drills will be completed with a puck on the stick. This will enhance the player's skating abilities and at the same time enhance the player's ability to maneuver on the ice with a puck. Drills during this phase will remain fast-paced to maintain the skating legs that players have built up in the beginning of the season.

The kids are doing a great job at skills so far, please tell your player to continue to come to skills with a positive attitude and strong work ethic!
