The Glenview Stars Girls U12 team won the 2014 Illinois State Hockey Championship with an exciting overtime win over the Admirals

It was an incredible weekend of hockey for the Stars Girls, as their hard work and perseverance brought home three well-earned State banners, including two State Championship banners at the U10 and U12 levels and a State second place banner at the U14 level!

As the Glenview Stars U10 Girls team made their way out of the locker room and onto the ice for the Illinois State Hockey U10 Championship, they knew they would be in for a dog fight. Their opponent that night, the Winnetka Warriors, were a fast, highly-skilled hockey team in search of the same prize. All season, the U10 Stars let hard work be the rally cry leading them into battle. This night would be no different. The game started off with both teams playing a tight, defensive style, waiting patiently for an opening. That opening would come late in the first period when Olivia Foran caught a breakout pass, skated toward center ice and sent a bounce pass off the boards that sprung Jillian Guittar on a breakaway. Guittar flew down the ice and slid the puck on the ice past the goalie's stick side, just inside the post, to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.

The Stars took that lead into the second period and added to it on a great goal by Luiza Santos. The Stars fed off their momentum and kept the heat on Winnetka. Santos, Guittar, and Dani Friedman pinned the Warriors in their zone, culminating in Santos walking to the front of the net and going top shelf to make the score 3-0. The Warriors were down, but not out. Less than 30 seconds later, they came out with a desperate flurry and made it a 3-1 game. That would wind up being the last of the scoring. The Stars defense of Karly Kolssak, Alejandra Ubarri, Annabelle Merkel, Gianna Miranda, Bella Crist and Caroline Curtis stepped their game up to another level. Goaltender Jill Hertl was strong between the pipes and the Stars U10 girls became State Champions! It was a truly wonderful ending to a great season for these girls that did nothing but impress their coaches and parents all year long.

The Stars Girls U12 team followed their U10 sisters onto the ice looking to make this a historic night for Stars' hockey. They squared off against the Admirals, a team they'd faced six other times during the course of the season and in tournaments. The teams exchanged wins, tied a couple of times and were about as evenly matched as could be. From the opening puck drop, the Stars came out flying. After a couple of close calls in the Admirals' end, the Stars lit the lamp when Bridget Falkenhayn finished off a great shift by ripping a shot past the Admirals' netminder. Elizabeth Ahne and Melina Maggio assisted on the tally. The lead was, however, short lived as the Admirals answered back before the first period ended.

In the second period, Audrey Hayes popped one in from just outside the goal mouth on a pass by Addie Carr. Falkenhayn added another goal, finishing off a great play by Ella Ridge to make it 3-1 Stars. The Admirals cut the lead to 3-2 on the power play. Hayes netted her second goal of the night to once again give the Stars a two-goal lead. The Admirals answered back with less than a minute left in the period to make it a 4-3 game going into the third period.

In the middle of the third, the Admirals tied the game by outworking the Stars in the neutral zone and in their own end. The Stars settled down after that and when regulation time expired, the game was headed to overtime.

The OT proved to be more wide open than the third period, with both teams exchanging great chances. Stars goalie Lauren Abraham made the save of the year by robbing an Admiral player off of a point blank rebound with a spectacular glove save that literally shook the stands. Less than a minute after that, the Stars were pressing hard around the Admirals' net. Lindsey Gulliksen found an opening from behind the goal line, fed Sarah Sanders in the low slot, and the Stars were State Champions!

In the Girls U14 division, the Glenview Stars Girls U14 team finished their winning season by battling the Sabres to a second place banner in a 3-2 double-overtime championship game.

The U14s also captured the second place flag in the NIHL Wolves Cup playoffs in February.

Congratulations to all three Stars teams on their impressive seasons!
