Championship Game Saturday, Feb. 22 in Joliet

The Glenview Stars PeeWee 4 team celebrates its win over the Sabres to advance to the NIHL championships

After a thrilling 2-1 overtime win, the Glenview Stars PeeWee 4 team is headed to Joliet this Saturday for the Wolves Cup final to face the President Cup winners, the Yellowjackets. After getting a scare from the No. 14 Cyclones in the first round, which the team won 3-2 in OT, the Stars defeated Northbrook 6-4 in the quarterfinals to set-up the Sunday semifinal showdown with the No. 2 seeded Sabres. During the regular season, the No. 3 seeded Stars were the only team to hand the Sabres a loss (1-0), which cost the Sabres the Presidents Cup. The team knew the Sabres would be looking to return the favor and eliminate the Stars from the Wolves Cup tournament.

However, as soon as the puck was dropped to start the game, the Stars showed they had come ready to play, creating several scoring chances in the first few minutes. After some great saves by goaltender Owen Crouth, and unable to get one past the Sabres goalie, the first period ended in a scoreless tie. In the second period, the Stars seemed to hold the advantage creating chance after chance, but were unable to score until defenseman Max Ibarra opened up the scoring on a wrist shot with an assist from his line partner Nate Barney. The Stars continued their strong play and held tight in a power play kill for three minutes, in which one minute was a two-man advantage for the Sabres. At the end of the second period the Stars still held the 1-0 lead. To start the third period, the Stars continued with offensive pressure but were unable to get a second goal. Near the nine minute mark, the Sabres were finally able to get the equalizer and tie it up, 1-1. After more great goaltending by Crouth and neither team able to get a second goal, the game ended in regulation, tied 1-1.

Clayton Finzer scores in overtime to send the Glenview Stars PeeWee 4 team to the NIHL championship game

In the sudden death overtime, it was fairly even and back and forth for both teams. After a penalty was called against the Stars, the Sabres were looking to put the game away with another power play opportunity. But on the ice for the penalty kill, forward Clayton Finzer would have none of that. After blocking a shot with his forearm, Finzer was able to take control of the puck. Despite constant shouts from the crowd, bench and coaches to "ice the puck," he was able to go the full length of the ice with a Sabre defender almost side-by-side and slid the puck through the Sabre goalie's "five-hole" to win the game and send the Stars to the championship. The Stars swarmed the ice to celebrate and now look forward to Joliet this weekend. Congratulations PeeWee 4 and good luck!
